What is IP VPN?
IP VPN stands for Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network.  IP VPN is a group of technologies that are widely used by businesses with multiple locations or remote end users.  IP VPN service provides secure, private and scalable communications over a public based IP infrastructure such as the Internet or service provider shared IP networks.  IP VPN services have largely replaced legacy VPN technologies which include ATM, Frame Relay and TDM based VPN services. How does IP VPN work?
At the core of IP VPN technologies are the encryption technologies which include encapsulation or tunneling algorithms.  There are three different types of IP VPN technologies and they include MPLS based IP VPN, IPsec based IP VPN and SSL based IP VPN.  Each IP VPN technology has a different purpose which will be discussed in more detail below.

MPLS IP VPN Service
The first IP VPN technology that will be discussed is Layer 3 MPLS based IP VPN.  With an MPLS IP VPN, labeling algorithms and signaling protocols are used to encapsulate IP packets and distribute VPN information.  MPLS IP VPN services can interface with legacy VPN technologies such as ATM, Frame Relay and TDM.  MPLS based IP VPN can be used as an alternative or used as a complementary VPN solution to legacy networking technologies.  The primary advantage of MPLS IP VPN is its scalability and support for both small and large-scale VPN deployments.  In addition, MPLS based IP VPN can support end-to-end QoS including rapid correction of link or node failure, bandwidth protection and other value added services.  SLAs can also be offered by the IP VPN service provider which allows for MPLS traffic engineering and reroute capabilities.  It is important to note that MPLS based IP VPN is a technology for site-to-site VPN communications only.

IPsec IP VPN Service
IPsec based IP VPN is a protocol that provides the framework for CPE-based Layer 3 VPNs.  IPsec IP VPN supports data confidentially by encrypting packets before transmission and ensures data integrity through authenticating packets and data origin authentication.  IPsec based IP VPN encapsulates security payload for confidentiality.  The IPsec protocol provides additional protection for IP packets by allowing network administrators to specify the traffic that needs protection.  It also allows for the definition of how the traffic is protected and who receives the traffic. The advantage of IPSec is that it meets network requirements, is highly cost-effective and offers greater flexibility.  IPSec IP VPN service is suitable for both site-to-site and remote-access VPNs.

SSL IP VPN Service
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer and is utilized for remote access VPNs rather than site-to-site VPNs.  With an SSL IP VPN, the SSL protocol is used for packet encapsulation and user authentication.  The SSL protocol provides access to web-based applications from any location with a web browser and Internet connection without the need for special client software.  SSL IP VPNs provide a secure connection by authenticating and communicating users and encrypting the traffic so it flows between the location and network.  SSL based IP VPN service only supports applications coded for SSL including email, Telnet, FTP, IP telephony and other applications requiring QoS.
